My friend Steph died 8 years ago today. She was a smashing person with a brilliant sense of humour, became ill when on her 4th honeymoon, to her best partner, and had been in a coma for several days. Had she known she was going to die on a date whose anniversary only occurs every 4 years she would have thought it hilarious.
In 1712 there was actually a 30 February in Sweden, because the country was changing from the Swedish to the Julian calendar. If Steph could have turned up her toes on 30 February I'm sure she would have done, and would have considered it a big laugh.
Davy Jones of the Monkees died on the same day.
29 February has never been a very lucky day so perhaps it's just as well it doesn't come around very often. In 1960 the Agadir earthquake in Morocco killed 12,000 people, in 1988 Desmond Tutu was arrested along with 100 of his comrades by the apartheid-era police in South Africa, an aeroplane crash killed 123 in the Andes in 1996 and in 2004 Haiti's very first democratically elected President Jean-Baptiste Aristide was ousted in a coup. On 29/2/1960 Richard Ramirez was born in El Paso and was to grow up to become a serial murderer and rapist known as the Night Stalker. He was sentenced to death 19 times but died of lymphoma in 2013 before the first of those 19 executions could be carried out.
